Yoga

Q: What is Yoga?

A: Yoga originated over 5,000 years ago in India. The word "yoga" comes from the Sanskrit word meaning union. Patanjali's ancient Yoga Sutras set out eight limbs of yoga, whose goal is a heightened state of consciousness, or "samadhi". In the West, the focus tends to be on the third limb, which is "asana", or the physical practice of yoga.

To me, yoga is a way of moving and being which encourages the union of the body, mind and spirit.  It helps to open and strengthen the body, while calming the mind and moving a person toward a more balanced state of existence.

Q: What are some of the benefits of practicing yoga?

A:

  • Increased flexibility
  • Stronger muscle tone
  • Feeling more "in tune" with your body
  • Improved balance
  • A deep sense of relaxation
  • Stress release
  • Emotional and physical well-being

Q: Do I have to be flexible to "do" Yoga?

A: No.  In fact one of the main reasons many people start practicing yoga is to increase their level of flexibility.  It doesn't matter if you can't touch your toes, or even your knees!  The beauty of yoga is that it can be practiced by anyone, regardless of flexibility or age.  The poses can be tailored to each individual, and are meant to encourage an increased level of body awareness.

Q: I live in a small apartment. How much space do I need for a private session?

A: Not much! Yoga can be practiced just about anywhere.  The size of a yoga mat (approximately 24" wide x 72" long) plus a little extra space on either side is all the room you'll need.

Q: What should I wear for a Yoga session?

A: You should wear clothes in which you can move and stretch comfortably.  Most people find that gym workout clothes are sufficient, but there are some great yoga clothes on the market.  Fitted t-shirts are better for yoga, as baggy tops tend to get in the way.

Q: Do I need any special equipment for a Yoga session?

A: To start with, a yoga mat is all you will need.  Once you begin to explore the poses more deeply, you may wish to purchase blocks, a belt, and maybe even a bolster for restorative poses. All of these items can easily be purchased online, or at nearly every sports/fitness store.

Reflexology and Reiki

Q: Does Reflexology really work?

A: Yes. While reflexology and reiki are not used specifically to treat medical conditions, they do work to restore, revitalize, sooth, and re-balance the entire being.

Q: Who can receive reflexology and reiki sessions?

A: Anyone can benefit from reflexology and reiki, including children, the elderly and the sick. Reflexology and reiki are safe, non-invasive methods of complementary healing.

Q: Is reiki associated with a religion?

A: No, reiki is not associated with a religion. It is a way of tapping into our own innate healing energy.

Q: What does a reiki treatment feel like?

A: What one experiences during a Reiki treatment varies somewhat from person to person. However, most recipients usually have a sense of deep relaxation. The reiki energy is often felt as heat or a tingling sensation. During a session, some people drift off to sleep or experience a heightened dream-like state. At the end of the treatment, most people report feeling refreshed with a more positive and balanced outlook.
